From last time, when I found out a game from a month ago (Snowrunner) used adpcm_ms, a Microsoft ADPCM variant from 1994:
I'm almost sure it was not a stylistic decision, but it works so well as one. ADPCM is very very noisy with low level low frequency signals. So it sounds like a vinyl record with the (audible quantization) background noise. Which is very fitting for the genre and atmosphere they were aiming for.
